HARDWOODS AND DYES
This project was made using scraps from the woodshop. The woods included maple, cherry, and walnut. The scraps were cut on the table saw, glued, and sanded on a wide-belt sander.
I was experimenting with indigo applications on wood at the time and added this piece to a cold indigo vat for over 24 hours. As a result, the piece warped and some of the glue joints failed. I allowed the scraps to dry, pulled the failed joints apart, reglued the scraps, and sanded the piece down again.
Because the piece was so thin, I glued a small scrap of 1/4" plywood to the back. After it was dry, I re-cut the edges, so they were clean.
I wanted to explore more dye techniques, so I used a rubber mallet to apply flowers from my garden. I steam-set the dye and applied a mineral oil to seal the wood.
